Gibby’s Field, nestled in East Vancouver’s Kensington–Cedar Cottage neighbourhood, occupies the last trace of historical Gibson’s Creek — once a thriving waterway rich with salmon and trout. As one of the earliest daylighting efforts in the City’s Rain City Strategy, the City of Vancouver entrusted Landesign with transforming this 0.15-hectare parcel into a resilient, community-centered green space.
Anchored by an engineered wetland that filters up to 90% of annual rainfall and treats over 6,250 m³ of stormwater each year — water that would otherwise stress the city’s infrastructure — the park now embraces both environmental and social purpose. To bring this vision to life, Landesign carried out intricate site preparation and grading, installed subsurface drainage, constructed curbs, pathways, and seating areas, and ensured the protection of mature trees throughout the process.
The final landscape blends natural planting with functional infrastructure, introducing more than 60 species of native and culturally significant plants. Gibby’s Field now provides neighbours, families, and pollinators with a thriving green refuge — a project that reflects Landesign’s values of sustainability, restoration, and lasting community impact.
