When a Vancouver City Council ordinance to “green” the Hastings corridor was issued, this natural oasis began life as a parking lot covered in an assortment of service buildings on the greater PNE site. First asphalt parking lots, roads and buildings were removed, followed by the subsequent excavation of tens of thousands of meters of subsoil to a total depth of over nineteen meters to create a hilly two-tiered water park. Then, under direction from Landscape Architects Phillips Farevaag Smallenberg and the Vancouver Parks Board, Landesign began construction of an entirely indigenous ten acre nature park in the heart of Vancouver’s east side.
Landesign’s scope of work included: site works, construction of island, finalization of subgrades;construction of rock and clay liner weir to establish upper pond water elevation; installation of 12” discharge pump and re-circulation piping; connection and grating for 2m COV storm water input pipe; construction of two concrete and steel bridges with IPE hand-rails and rough-hewn surface; boardwalk and railings; various concrete walls, stairs, seating areas throughout site; granite boulder seating; gravel paths and roadways; 12x12 post and wire safety fencing; custom concrete and IPE benches; underground irrigation;topsoil and plant installation.
